Lawyer's hemline irks Parliament security

PETALING JAYA: The fashion police are at it again, this time in Parliament. Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) assistant treasurer Meera Samanther was the latest target when she was told that her outfit was deemed "indecent" by security personnel at the Parliament entrance on Thursday. "I was shocked when a security personnel approached me and said my skirt was too short," she told The Star on Friday. A lawyer by profession, Meera said she was wearing her usual court attire, which included a knee-length skirt. "I lost my cool, so I raised my voice and I told him to stop harassing me," she said, adding that the security personnel were surprised by her reaction and let her walk off. Meera was in Parliament with a few others from women non-governmental organisations to meet Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran and M. Indira Gandhi over the deferment of the debate on the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill to the next Parliament session. Meera said the security personnel should focus on actual security threats instead of being moral police. She added one of her colleagues was also stopped at the guardhouse as she was driving in to get a security pass. "The security personnel even peeked into the car to see what she was wearing and told her to get down so they could see the length of the skirt. "This is unacceptable," she said. There have been various news reports about officers at public facilities who barred access to women who they deemed dressed "inappropriately". Meanwhile, Parliament Malaysia's head of corporate communications Tengku Nasaruddin Tengku Mohamed said the incident is being investigated. "Parliament will issue an official statement soon," he said.

Constituents oblivious to Tasek Gelugor MP making global headlines

Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahya may have made global headlines over his "rape" remarks, but the majority of his constituents met by Malaysiakini were oblivious to the issue. 

A group of college students, both male and female, on their laptops at a food court, said they were unaware that the lawmaker had made such remarks. 

Only when told about the issue did some of the constituents react, some rather emotionally. 

Thangaletchumy Ragadevan, 50, from Kampung Pokok Machang, claimed Shabudin was not a caring MP and that the Indian community in the constituency had been marginalised. 

"Never mind all that, it is frustrating to hear his latest remark about rape, it is a total embarrassment to the people here. 

"We never expected to hear this from an educated man," she said. 

"Imagine if anything happened to the ladies here, he might just say 'forgive the guy and marry him".

Shabudin has since claimed that his initial remarks were taken out of context and clarified he was referring to statutory rape case involving consensual sex between a couple, one of whom may be underaged. 

Another constituent, Rozaini Ahmad, wondered what message Shabudin was trying to convey to the youths, with his remarks. 

Rozaini, who ha  daughter, said the notion of getting a rape victim married to her rapist was unthinkable in this day and age, and personally, he would never subject his daughter to such a trauma. 

"Shabudin talks as if he is encouraging rape, we should not give our youths any ideas like that.

"His suggestion is really inappropriate as the Gen Y may misunderstand his proposal and think it is okay to rape, as you can then marry your victim as an easy way out," said the 43 year-old businessman.

Farrah Erika Ruslan fumed when she heard about Shabudin's remarks, calling it "utterly senseless".

"He has definitely insulted woman, as he focused on the issue of women alone.

"It is completely wrong for a rapist to marry his victim, he (the rapist) should pay for his crime, and not solve it with marriage," said the 20-something petite woman. 

She also expressed disgust at Shabudin's remark about some young girls, aged between nine and 12 years old, having bodies akin to an 18-year-old. 

Two women, in their 50s, who came to observe a rally held by Pakatan Harapan in Tasek Gelugor, to urge Shabudin's sacking from Umno yesterday evening, declined to comment on the issue.

However, they said Shabudin's justification that his contentious suggestions were in line in Islam, was wrong. 

"His suggestion is against Islam, and it is shameful to hear such words," said one woman, who requested anonymity. 

The other concurred. "It is like giving the rapist a good opportunity to escape his crimes, a free offer, but who suffers? Only the victim."

Hindu mother M. Indira Gandhi today rued her long wait for “justice” after Putrajaya delayed amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 meant to end unilateral conversions.

The amendment Bill did not emerge during yesterday’s Parliament sitting and was removed from the Order Paper today, meaning it will only resurface at the next session in July at the soonest.

Indira, who faced an eight-year ordeal after her three children were unilaterally converted to Islam by her ex-husband, expressed sadness and disappointment over the government’s decision.

“I was given the assurance that the Bill will be passed this time; I was hoping at least something will happen this time,” said an emotional Indira during a press conference at the media area in Parliament this morning.

Putrajaya, despite repeated promises, deferred the Bill despite extending Parliament hours for a record 20 hours until 5.05 am earlier today to pass a slew of other government bills.

The Bills were passed to pave way for PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s private member’s bill to increase Shariah Court sentencing.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said was quoted as saying by the Berita Harian newspaper that the LRA amendments were deferred following consultation with lawyers.

“The fate of my children is still uncertain. I need my justice, it’s already been eight years, how many more years do I have to wait?” she said.

Indira was accompanied by DAP’s Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who is also her lawyer in her battle to reverse the unilateral conversion of her three children, and members from Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG).

Kula also criticised Putrajaya and government leaders for “misleading” them into believing the Bill would be tabled in this session, and demanded an explanation.

“This is a necessary bill for non-Muslims. Why are they preventing it?” he asked.

The amendment is facing resistance from Muslim lawmakers, lawyers and non-governmental organisations who contend that it was unconstitutional.

Teacher discriminating Indian student in Malaysia

Sindiket penipuan forex RM80j tumpas

KENDERAAN dan barangan dianggarkan bernilai RM750,000 yang dirampas daripada enam suspek sindiket penipuan pelaburan matawang asing dalam Operasi Nuri 3/17 oleh JSJK Bukit Aman, 

KUALA LUMPUR: Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Komersial (JSJK) Bukit Aman menahan enam individu yang mendalangi aktiviti penipuan skim pelaburan pertukaran mata wang asing (forex) membabitkan nilai kerugian mencecah RM80 juta.

Kesemua suspek termasuk seorang wanita berusia antara 28 hingga 38 tahun itu ditahan menerusi Operasi Nuri 3/17 dalam serbuan di beberapa lokasi berasingan di Kuala Lumpur, Pahang dan Selangor, semalam.

Pengarah JSJK Bukit Aman, Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, berkata pihaknya menerima 408 laporan polis berkenaan skim pelaburan berkenaan yang dikendalikan sebuah syarikat dikenali sebagai Syarikat VenusFX.

"Berdasarkan siasatan yang dijalankan, kita mendapati syarikat ini memperdaya mangsa untuk membuat pelaburan forex yang hakikatnya tidak wujud.

"Setiap pelabur dikehendaki membuat pelaburan minimum sebanyak RM2,000 sehingga maksimum RM40,000 dan pembayaran keuntungan dibuat secara harian. Bagaimanapun, mangsa tidak menerima keuntungan yang dijanjikan setelah membuat pelaburan," katanya dalam satu kenyataan media, hari ini.

Katanya, siasatan mendapati kira-kira 23,259 pelabur menjadi mangsa penipuan skim pelaburan ini dengan anggaran kerugian mencecah RM80 juta.

"Selain tangkapan, kita turut merampas satu unit komputer riba, 10 buah telefon bimbit pelbagai jenama, 10 keping kad pengeluaran wang (ATM) dan lima buah kenderaan dengan nilai kesemua rampasan dianggarkan RM750,000.

"Kesemua suspek kini direman selama 21 hari untuk siasatan di bawah Seksyen 3(1) Akta Pencegahan Jenayah 1959 Pindaan 2014 (Akta 297)," kata Acryl Sani lagi.

Justeru, beliau menasihatkan orang ramai agar sentiasa berwaspada dan tidak mudah menjadi mangsa penipuan sekiranya ditawarkan bentuk pelaburan yang menjanjikan pulangan lumayan dalam masa yang singkat.

"Jika ada terima tawaran sebegitu, segera buat semakan dengan agensi-agensi kerajaan yang berkaitan bagi memastikan kesahihan pelaburan sekali gus mengelakkan menjadi mangsa sindiket penipuan," kata beliau.
